Dog Adoption
Handsome Hugo is now ready for adoption.
Hugo is a sprightly 6 year old Springer x Poodle who loves a bit of fun. He is obsessed with water and will chase a hose all day but would be best if you don't have a pond in your garden!
Hugo needs an Adult only home no under 16's living in the house.
Hugo wouldn't run up to a child and bite nor would he hurt a fly out and about on walks he's so soppy and a real sweet dog! At the rescue he's the perfect guest walks with other dogs and we can send him out with any volunteers.
BUT he's been returned twice! Hugo goes into a new home and likes to pick up things that he shouldn't, IE tissues, packets, anything small he can find he shouldn't have and then guards them! Growling, and has snapped but didn't break the skin! As we haven't seen any of this behaviour at the rescue I needed to take him home with me to figure out why and how to solve this issue. Hugo came home and was very bewildered due to my pack letting him know his place in our home so to begin with I had no issues as he wasn't acting his confident self! After an hour I decided to pop my dog's in the kitchen and let Hugo relax and chill on the sofa and relaxed my rules. I don't really have things laying about so I got an empty tissue packet and a empty Ibuprofen packet and dropped them on the floor, it didn't take him long to grab the packet and run off growling with it! Treats actually made him worse like he's used to being bribed and he got crosser. I tried to just take it but again he got very cross and snapped out over it. The best way forward was to get the slip lead hook it over his head and take him away from the item. He wasn't happy but it worked and within 2 minutes of me taking the packet away he was my best mate again cuddling on the sofa! We did a lot of work that evening teaching him to leave it and teaching him to stay in his crate with the door open and learning to relax!
He doesn't guard his toys or his or even his food! You can play and take toys out of his mouth. His issues all start with things he steals.
I really adore this dog and believe in a confident home with clear black & white boundary's he will get a lot better each time. You must be confident and not be nervous as he would only get worse if this behaviour isn't corrected or ignored! We are always here to help with training and you won't be going into this alone, for this reason you need to live in the Norfolk area so staff are able to be on hand for help and support. I have no concerns with him in my home , I found him easy to manage but I understand my home isn't a normal home.
If this hasn't put you off and you're happy to put in the work you'll have the best dog as he really is the sweetest boy!!
He is good with other dogs and loves to play with them. He would need to go to an active household that can give him plenty of play and activities to keep him busy as well as going on adventures.
He will need people that can be firm but fair with him so he knows his place and will be an awesome family member once he settles in.
As with any rescue dog there's a chance he will have the odd accident in the house till he understands where he is meant to go But he is 100% crate trained and was quiet all night.
